Structure and Protection
Function-
The minerals that produce bone create a strong material. A newborn usually has around 300-350 bones at birth. This is helps the mother during childbirth as a newborn a developing skeleton would be much easier to conceive. In an adult human being with 206 bones the placement of the bones creates the shape of the human body.
As well as providing body shape and structure, the skeleton and muscles also protect the organs inside the body. The skull is specifically placed to protect the brain just as the ribs a placed to protect the lungs and the heart. This is because the human skeleton is an endoskeleton, meaning that the bones of the body are found within. This is in contrast to an exoskeleton where the bones form the most outer layer of the body of an animal (eg lobsters, crabs) and the hydroskeleton where the animal does not have bones
but rather internal fluids that act as bones (eg squids, starfish).
